Simple Solution to Poor Signal Indoors: Wi-Fi Calling
In the Help & Information section of our website Footer you'll see the Coverage checker. This allows you to see the mobile phone signal strength of the main mobile networks here in the UK. If you check your signal you'll see that the network gives you an indication for the strength both inside and outside.
We've all had this issue - speaking on the phone outdoors is fine, but once you move inside the signal collapses and your phone call starts breaking up. Most of us have tried the tactic of squeezing up to the window for a better signal, but it isn't necessary!
The good news is that Wi-Fi Calling can solve this issue easily. Despite being available for years, many people either aren’t using it or think they are when they’re not!
What is Wi-Fi Calling?
Wi-Fi Calling allows you to make and receive calls and texts over a Wi-Fi network instead of relying on your mobile signal. It’s perfect for areas where your mobile coverage might be weak but you have a strong Wi-Fi connection (use the Coverage checker to check your home and office signal strength).
Note that you will need the password to be logged into the Wi-Fi network to use Wi-Fi calling:
For private/home Wi-Fi: once you've connected to a private Wi-Fi network and saved the password, your phone will automatically reconnect when you're in range.
For public Wi-Fi: you may need to reconnect to Wi-Fi calling each time you visit a public Wi-Fi network, as they don't usually keep you logged in.
How to Ensure Wi-Fi Calling is Enabled
To avoid confusion, here’s a quick guide to making sure Wi-Fi Calling is activated on both iOS and Android devices:
On iOS (iPhone):
Open the Settings app.
Scroll down and tap Phone.
Select Wi-Fi Calling.
Toggle on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone.
Follow any on-screen instructions to set it up.
On Android:
Open the Settings app.
Search for or navigate to Wi-Fi Calling (usually under Connections or Network & Internet).
Toggle on Wi-Fi Calling.
If prompted, confirm your preferences and follow any additional instructions.
If, like me, you use Android, the different makes of phone may have variations to the above. For example, on my Samsung phone, to find Wi-Fi calling settings I can:
Open the Phone app
Tap the More options icon, which looks like three dots
Select Settings
Tap the switch to turn Wi-Fi calling on or off
You can also enable Wi-Fi calling from the quick settings panel by swiping down from the top of the screen and tapping the Wi-Fi Calling icon.
